March 28, 2018 Chapter Meeting

Bill Sammler, Warning Coordination Meteorologist at NOAA/National Weather Service spoke to the group on the warning systems on the Eastern Shore.  He is the Emergency management and media liaison for NWS Wakefield, and the State Liaison Officer for offices serving VA. Serve state and local emergency managers, and state agency partners in VA, the Lower MD Eastern Shore and northeast NC. He is frequently interviewed by local media in the Richmond, Hampton Roads and Salisbury MD areas. In addition, he makes a number of weather related presentations, and perform training, some of which is sponsored by the VA Dept. Emergency Management.  Below is the presentation Bill gave to our group.

July 18, 2018 Chapter Meeting

Our guest speaker was Tony Picardi, he spoke on the butterflies of the Eastern Shore, providing an information presentation along with many examples of the butterflies he has collected.   The following day he conducted a walking tour of the Mutton Hunk Fen identifying species.

September 19, 2018 Chapter Meeting

Guest Speaker:  John Kleopfer, The State Herpetologist at DGIF, “Snakes of Virginia and the Eastern Shore”

November 14, 2018 Chapter Meeting

Guest Speaker:  Holly Gaff (or one of the research team members)  “Virginia–A Mixing Bowl for Ticks ad Pathogens”

January 16, 2019 Chapter Meeting

Guest Speaker:  Dot Fields “Song bird habitation restoration”

February 23, 2019 Heritage Festival

Members performed Education Outreach for the Virginia Eastern Shore Chapter Master Naturalists.

March 20, 2019 Chapter Meeting

Speaker will be Matt Young “30 Years of Piping Plover Productivity on Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Then, Dot Field will present annual awards and certifications, re-certification and volunteer hours and probably thank the planters who participated in the planting of the new addition to Magothy Bay NAP.

May 15, 2019 Chapter Annual Picnic at Mutton Hunk Fen

Dear Colleague, You and your spouse or a friend are invited to the Annual Master Naturalists Picnic at Mutton Hunk Fen on Wednesday May 15th (rain date May 22nd) from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Please put both dates on your calendar!

Entertainment will be provided by our own Greg Shupe after we have eaten. Come enjoy picnic fare and  socializing with your fellow master naturalists. Please be sure to bring the following items:

                                 $5.00 to cover the cost of hot dogs and burgers/veggie burgers

                                  A side dish, salad or dessert to share

                                  Your own beverage (cups must be used for any alcoholic beverages)

                                  Chair for each person

                                  Hat, umbrella or sun shade and sun screen

                                 Mosquito and tick repellent

Directions: From Route 13, turn East onto Metompkin Road, SR679 (a brick church is on the corner). Follow Metompkin Road through a sharp turn to the left for 1.4 miles. Turn right on Baker Road SR742. Go through the gate- parking will be available next to the picnic area.
